The Sacrifices of the Canal du Midi
France, Hérault (34), Villeneuve-Les-Béziers. In 2012 the French government decided to cut down all of the 42,000 plane trees that line the Canal du Midi. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, all the canal trees are threatened by a killer fungus, the colored canker. Since 2006 more than 22,000 diseased trees have been eliminated and burned.
